About the painting:

There is a deeply rooted belief that we have to do something with intense feelings, as they wash over us and threaten to drown us.
We must understand them, figure them out, link them to something or someone, relieve them, distract ourselves from them, transform them, make them go away, or even ‘heal’ them. All of it is really a thinking of our feelings.
A lot of us seem to spend so much time and energy trying to escape our big feelings, as surely they would be the end of us, if we let them in!
But what if, for just one moment, we did absolutely nothing with the surges of emotional intensity?
If we neither denied nor elevated whatever we were feeling? What if all we did was allow them?
What if we didn't abandon ourselves in moments of emotional intensity, didn't seek relief, or a story? What if we did nothing but breathe? What if we just observed the ebb and flow, without attaching meaning?
Would it really drown us - in that moment? Could we manage to feel it, tiny moment, by tiny moment?
Do those feelings really need healing, or are they actually just asking to be allowed, felt, acknowledged?
What if the "healing" is in the "doing nothing?" The doing "nothing" that's not a frozen, passive, avoidant response, or a "thinking" of our feelings - but a deep compassion and a radical act of kindness toward ourselves.
